I love it

Reviewed on 2021-04-07T04:22:25

I love it. I am reading again after the sad, final death of my beloved Sony PRS-1. Yes. It's old,but it still had a collection of books on it. But alas, it died it's final death and I had to find a replacement. I needed something light, with a lot of memory, that allowed me to put files of my choosing on it directly (so, no to Kindle), and that had a good screen that wouldn't kill my eyes. I looked at other choices, spent some time mourning my PRS-1 again, and then decided on the Kobo Libra H2O. I don't know if I need it to be waterproof, but it had everything else I needed. It's small enough for my bag, my jacket pocket, and light enough to hold while standing around. I immediately filled it with my library, and I am happily e-reading again. But most importantly, I can easily put drafts of my own work on it for review reading. Glorious!

Fails to honour promotions

Reviewed on 2021-04-07T02:01:39

Kobo offered 100 points per book read during February, but I had to chase them up several times and they still refuse to give the points earned by the terms of their promotion. The help centre is very difficult to locate and contact, the staff don't seem to know anything about the promotion, and took a long time to come back to me with a result (which was wrong in any case). The app is locking up my phone and doesn't seem to be able to handle lots of books in your personal library (1000+), forcing to have periodic purges whether I want to or not. You can't sort by genre on the iphone app, which would have been very helpful. The bonus is there are many good books available, including many free books from starting authors and introducing ongoing series. I would be happier putting up with the glitches in the app if the service was honest and reliable re: pricing and promotions. Unless Kobo put right their refusal to honour their promotion I will look for another service to continue with.

Horrible / Unresponsive Customer Service

Reviewed on 2021-04-06T04:30:01

I wanted to return my Kobo Clara HD e-reader and emailed Kobo Rakuten Canada about it,as per the site’s refund policy instructions. I emailed help(at)kobo.com 3 times to inform them about my return and to ask about the mailing address for the return (since it was not found in the return policy section of their site — they should do something about that). No one has replied to me which has been absolutely aggravating. I was told by Canada Post that the returned item would ship to Kobo in 2-4 business days. It’s been 4 business days and no one has contacted me about the refund.

Good buy!

Reviewed on 2021-04-05T22:09:36

Purchased: Refurbished Kobo Clara HD I was looking for: Non-Amazon e-reader, compatible with Overdrive.I like: Can check out Overdrive titles and read them instantly. Nice screen, good "sleep" settings, long battery life. Comparable price to competition. Why not 5 stars? 2 things. 1. The clunky interface feels outdated and wouldn't be difficult to upgrade. Investing in the interface would easily make e-reader the best in its class! 2. The interface is centered around the Kobo bookstore. Would prefer if I didn't feel like even my e-reader is trying to sell me things!! Would I recommend it? For sure, especially if you're looking for a way to reduce screen time and still read those library e-books!

The Libra H2O machine I received is…

Reviewed on 2021-04-05T15:50:17

The Libra H2O machine I received is well made, light and ergonomically pleasant. Once I was easily synced up to my KOBO,Libra and pocket accounts I started by loading a few KOBO books, checking out a few library books and syncing articles. It went very smooth. 2 weeks in, 3 novels down and multiple articles enjoyed. Recharging as I write this(2 full weeks of juice). I could not be happier.

A gift of books for my daughter

Reviewed on 2021-04-04T21:18:00

I purchased the Kobo Libra for my daughter who lives in South Korea. She loves books but, unfortunately, due to a small apartment, she has limited space. Therefore, I purchased the Kobo for her. She absolutely loves it. She said it was easy to use and there was virtually no learning curve. Her only complaint is that she cannot download the app used by many libraries, Over Drive.

Very nice Kindle alternate.

Reviewed on 2021-04-04T13:39:49

I’ve been using a Kindle reader for many years, currently have the Voyager. This device, the Kobo Clara is my favorite now. It is light weight, easy to grip or hold in hands to read, and excellent backlighting when needed. Pros: WiFi automatically switches on or off as needed (saves battery!), when sleeping displays the cover of the current book you’re reading with a small progress bar. Cons: the power button is in an inconvenient location at the bottom and sometimes hard to press as it is almost flush with the case, no integration with Goodreads, and no ability to send your own books over WiFi — must connect to computer to transfer books. Because I use Caliber on my computer, I’m used to transfer books this way. Overall very pleased.
