No longer a reliable source of news

I've been a New York Times subscriber for years. Unfortunately, it's no longer the reliable source of news it once was.90% of the articles in NYT are not real news articles. There's sensationalism everywhere. Lots of opinion pieces disguised as news. Lots of clickbait titles. One article from around April 2020 stated, in the title, that Amazon should prove that it's an essential business. It wasn't marked as opinion or an editorial, but that's all it was. Another article claimed that New York schools are racially segregated. Again, not marked as opinion, but that's what it was, and few people would agree with NYT's opinion. An article from 1-2 years ago claimed that US border patrol agents are only doing what's best for migrants, which is laughably untrue. No one believes that. Pandemic coverage has been very alarmist. That's NYT's term, not mine. NYT constantly uses the term 'alarming' in its headlines. One article claimed that Oklahoma was seeing an 'alarming' increase in COVID cases. Well, there was an uptick in cases, but few people in Oklahoma were alarmed by it (although they maybe should have been more concerned by it). And no one outside of Oklahoma cares what happens in Oklahoma. Yet another clickbait title. A more accurate title would be: NYT reports that NYT is alarmed by increase in Oklahoma COVID cases. Another common theme: NYT interviews a bunch of nobodies and reports what they said as news. These aren't famous or important people, and there's no evidence that their opinions are representative of a larger group. Yet NYT cherry-picked their statements and reported them as news. Just more biased, non-news-worthy reporting from the NYT. NYT has very little practical information. When the NY governor rolled out localized pandemic restrictions, nearly every NY news site had maps--except the NYT, which seemed to treat the story as more of an academic curiosity. No reader would want to know if the new restrictions apply to their neighborhood, right? The only good thing about NYT lately is that it was easy to cancel. It took 30 seconds.

As others have noted, they use every sleazy trick in the book to keep you from cancelling,from raising your price without notifying you (check your credit card bill carefully if you subscribe) to forcing you to wait endlessly in a queue before you can persuade a staffer to 'allow' you to cancel.

cancellation process horrible

Enjoyed the articles and podcasts but cancellation is horrible. Would like to subscribe again but thenat some point I would have to go through the cancellation process again wich I'm not willing to do. for me it was just a chat were someone tried to convince me to get the subscription for 1$ per month but still thats very annoying if you just want to cancel.

Difficult to cancel subscription

I have had the electronic paper now for a year at a cheap rate. I have enjoyed the paper. However,I do not find the time to read it, so I wanted to cancel my subscription. No so easy. I went through the following steps: 1) Tried to cancel via my account tab via the internet. But it is not possible to cancel a subscription on the internet. Calling the number for Denmark given on the homepage iI an told this is the wrong number (and given another number - namely 80830403. Calling that number gives options. If I choose cancel subscription, then I am directed to an answering machine saying "Thank you for calling 24/7. You have reached an unassigned number. Good bye" Tried to then choose other and at the prompt I said "cancel my subscription" Again I am directed to the answering machine that says: "Thank you for calling 24/7. You have reached an unassigned number. Good bye" Then I went back and used the Chat function. This worked, and after only 15 minutes of back and forth questions and information about all the benefits that I will loose by cancelling my subscription, it was finally cancelled. I appreciate that for many US citizens this is normal, but for a European, this type of deliberate obstacles and wasting peoples time when you want to no longer receive a service is unacceptable.

I spent 2 hour cancelling!!!

I spent 1 hour cancelling my subscription 2 weeks before the next charge and the person said they canceled and they did nothing.So just in case I called back again the day of cancellation and waited 20 minutes for someone named Georgio to waste more time selling a subscription and then telling me that it will take 2 more weeks to cancel now. #incompetence Then I wrote to the help line (NOT AT ALL HELPFUL). Person named Nagaylene copy pasted a response without reading my concern at all. And guess what it said - please go to chat to cancel. Of course because so far the only thing is that I don't know how to read english - and that's why I buy NYT right? That help section has no way to reply.So each time you explain from beginning the incompetence shown by each person in NYT. #fraud #thisneedstobeonNYTpage1 #horrible

Trouble getting the paper delivered, cancellation is not straightforward

I signed up for a digital subscription plus Sunday home delivery. Probably about 60% of the time there was no paper on Sunday,let alone by 7:30 a.m. as promised. I emailed customer service asking if there was some kind of mixup since our house number is obvious from the street. They blamed high volume/Covid and told me they would inform the delivery staff, but there were still missing papers. We have cameras on our property and it was obvious that no one had attempted a delivery. I decided to cancel because I was irritated with the inconsistency and because the digital content wasn't all that engaging to me. NYTimes does not allow cancellation from an online account -- customers are forced to call or go to chat support, which made me think they were going to try beating around the bush. I got a chat session and I stated that I wanted a full cancellation of services. The employee sent me a lengthy paragraph starting with "Please give us another chance", saying she would talk to the delivery staff again. I'm sorry, but no; please just do what I'm asking you to do. It annoys me that this company seems to have hired a taskforce just to beg customers to stay. Does some poor employee get in trouble now just because I ended up cancelling anyway? If a customer wants to cancel, just let them cancel, and put the power in their hands to do so! Based on these other reviews, I must now keep an eye out for them charging me past my cancellation. And lastly, even though I cancelled on 2/9, they said "Your stop date has been scheduled for 2/14". Trying to squeeze in one more billing cycle? This company does not operate in a straightforward way at all. Potential customers beware.
