Badly handled if a teacher doesn't show up

Reviewed on 2021-03-08T08:21:31

They are good for some things but the classes are quite expensive for what they are.My main put off is that there's no consistent customer service policy. I had a cancelled class and was in full communication with the teacher and they offered me a voucher because of the inconvenience in cancelling. I thought that was really nice as I didn't really have that much of an inconvenience. Then when a teacher didn't bother to turn up because it was only my children enrolled on a one off weekend course, we sat there watching a screen for 20 mins then all the time wasting on chat, disappointed kids and having no time to sort something else out etc, there is no compensation and noone cares you've actually been inconvenienced. I'll stick to social groups where I know there's lots of kids and avoid anything else like the one off interesting topics I was looking for.

Unethical Platform that Should not be in Business

Reviewed on 2021-01-06T10:28:37

I listed my courses on Outschool for a year and a half. I made a lot of money through the platform, but ultimately their business practices were not something I am comfortable with. To begin, a teacher, under their own terms and conditions, is one who offers classes. Not a teacher in the sense of qualifications, education, certification, or experience. Parents purchase classes assuming they are doing so with actual, licensed teachers. They are not a honest company at all. Unethical in many ways, and operating illegally under U.S. law. They misclassify teachers as independent contractors while they micromanage every aspect of their work. They know that teachers do not have business licenses, insurance, nor offer services to the general public, yet they still operate in California. They know these are facts because it is stated many times in their official teachers group on Facebook. More facts: Many teachers work 50+ hours a week and 12 hour days and do not receive any type of lunch break, accrue vacation or sick time, maternity leave, or even unemployment when they fire teachers at will. To give some examples of how they control teachers, I have had classes rejected because I didn’t capitalize a word in the title. Teachers have to use their Zoom accounts, abide by their rules, and use their messaging system which constantly has problems and does not deliver messages. You are not allowed to speak with parents or students through your own email or by phone, which makes it complicated when they do not have a working messaging system. They routinely hang teachers out to dry and do not even respect their own happiness guarantee. They took over $500 from my pay, because a parent said I agreed to a refund. They took that money out of a completely different course, and never asked me about it. When I explained that the parent never even asked me, and that I had transferred the students due to the parent request because of a scheduling issue, in addition to 2 complimentary level tests on my part and a sibling discount, they replaced the money. But that they can even make decisions about a teachers pay is not what an independent contractor relationship is. It’s an employee-employer one. They approve courses and classes that blatantly infringe on both trademarks and copyrights. You can find hundreds of Harry Potter, Disney, Nickelodeon, etc. on the platform offered by “teachers” who have no degrees or certifications. Since COVID, they have price-gouged. Now, “teachers” charge $20 per student for classes with up to 18 kids in a group! It’s insane how wrong that is. Many teachers post their earnings in their official group, over 100K per year and no one pays taxes. They pay teachers to personal PayPal accounts and then claim it is the teachers responsibility to have a legit business. I am a parent as well but I don’t purchase classes with them. I refuse to pay $15 for my preschooler to sing songs from Frozen for 25 minutes... in a group of 12. We can do that for free at home.

Amazing social interactions and quality of instructors

Reviewed on 2020-12-25T07:34:39

We are in a state that is completely locked down due to the pandemic, there are essentially no ways for my 6-year-old son to interact with other kids.We have tried a few Outschool offerings recently and it has been so nice for him to interact with others in a small group setting. I have been impressed with the quality of the instructors and all of the kids have behaved appropriately. I am also amazed at the number of different class types available!

Whether You're A Teacher Or A Learner, Avoid Outschool Like You Avoid Covid-19!

Reviewed on 2020-10-08T19:00:40

I am writing this review as a former teacher on Outschool's platform (June 2018-October 2020).Their big marketing gimmick to recruit teachers is that they're the platform not clouded by bureaucracy. HA! That couldn't be further from the truth. They are quite terrible about micro-managing. They also classify their teachers as Independent Contractors, yet treat them as employees. Of course, they do this to skirt having to provide the required employment benefits (California now has a law specifically aimed at thwarting this, which I will probably look into further). They don’t actually provide much to the teacher at all, but a very basic scheduling platform that utilizes Zoom, a shady video conferencing service that is surrounded by a myriad of scandal with regard to it’s ACTUAL safety/privacy factors, versus what it’s marketed as having. I still cannot justify how they were ethically able to take their “30% service fee” from every enrollment. As someone who has also worked professionally in the IT industry for over 23 years (and I am still active), I can attest that there is absolutely nothing extraordinary about their platform. I have also taught on a few of the Chinese-based English-learning platforms (I.e. VIPKid), and those were all actually better developed, in terms of features and functionality, than Outschool’s platform. (I DO NOT recommend any of those Chinese platforms either. They are just as bad about micro-managing and unethical practices.) So, overall, they just simply flout employment laws (especially those in their home state of California), micro-manage, and take a “service fee” they don’t actually deserve just to provide a vanilla platform that utilizes a shady video conferencing service. They also do some advertising to get leads for the teachers, but anyone who hasn’t been living under a rock for the past 10-20 years knows that online advertising (I.e. Facebook, Google) isn’t very expensive at all, and it’s also fairly simple to do. I tolerated their chicanery for longer than I should have, then finally decided that enough was enough. I’m in the process of developing my own educational platform that is MUCH better and uses a MUCH better video conferencing software, and will handle my own advertising, and will, according to my calculations, still earn more per enrollment than I was under the tyrannical reign of Outschool. And to be quite honest, not to toot my own horn, I was a 5-star teacher on the platform. Never had any issues with students or parents. In fact, parents were quite thrilled with results of my courses. Based on my own experiences, as a teacher, and hearing things from the learner side of it, I would caution teachers and students/parents to avoid Outschool like you avoid Covid-19.

Stores credit card and just keeps charging

Reviewed on 2020-06-15T17:33:25

Beware! The teachers are kind and great, the company is super sketchy! Not only can you not accessyour stored credit card *unless you are purchasing another class* you have to contact them to find out how to stop this from happening. Read that again. You do not have control over your credit card and billing. The last time I checked, this is called theft. I now have to go to my bank and deny all charges going forward from Outschool and spend my time making sure every parenting group I belong to knows about these practices. Very dubious and making parent and guardian lives harder. There are plenty of better places for your kids to be learning. This is no ally for kids or families. When you ask them about it they direct you to purchase a new class so you can see your credit card information.
