Satisfactory at best. When paying for developmental editing, one would assume their manuscript will be improved,but I learned the hard way that developmental editing in itself is more or less a waste of money. What I received could have been done for less, with the same quality if not better. I also find it strange that my editor seemed unwilling to provide anything beneficial aside from, don’t do this or please consider this instead of that. In other words, if your piece is already good in their eyes, a developmental editor likely won’t take it past that point. Because why would they want you to succeed in an industry they were hoping to flourish in? A good one will do this for you, but you have to roll the dice just to see if you can get that much.
This is not what I was expecting and most certainly not worth the price I paid for what I received in the long run. But can you blame someone who has figured out how the system works? How to do the absolute bare minimum and still get paid for it? No, I blame the company for allowing this kind of behavior.
So, my fellow authors, beware. I ask that you take the time to learn what type of editing is right for you, and don’t allow a few articles raving about how great developmental editing is for writers. And lastly, shop around before assuming a reputable company will do what you are expecting, because in the end, they will only tell you it looks fine to our Quality Assurance team and push you aside in order to carry on to the next paying customer. It will be left up to the editor you are assigned to, to do their job to the fullest extent; and do you really want someone that has no clue of your creative process or of how your characters are supposed to speak with such a responsibility?
