Avoid if you need a professional service

Reviewed on 2021-04-25T08:21:10

I have been with Crashplan since 2017 and have spent over two years getting my initial backup completed due to my slow internet.I persevered and things were OK for most of that time until I encountered a persistent cycle of 'routine maintenance' and synchronisation (preventing both backing up and restores). Both interuptions take hours or days to complete. Theses intrusions got worse until I encountered a 'waiting for connection' issue. That went on for nine days (the time in which the customer service took to get back). They said that it was because my backup was too large (around 4.5Tb) and had several versions of each file. Despite following the instructions to reduce it (purging old versions) the issue continued. I also wanted to change my bank details but that revealed another (know) issue, so another workaround was suggested. All in all this is not the professional business service Crashplan forced on their customers when they removed the home user option (wanting to concentrate on business clients, they said). There's little evidence that they've been concentrating on that. With reluctance (after all the years getting my backup on the cloud) I am forced to terminate this amateur service. I'm utterly outraged that they have gone downhill recently and I can't see that they will turn things around, judging by the poor reviews and the competition.

If you have a business with 2.5 TB to backup, they will make you leave disconnecting your software from their servers.Avoid.

I've used CrashPlan for years

Reviewed on 2021-04-05T20:38:08

I've used CrashPlan for years. It has not always worked perfectly, but it is a good value.Lately they implemented 2-factor authentication (2FA) with the only way to authenticate is with untrusted third-party app or browser extension. Are you kidding me? I use about 30-50 other services (google, microsoft, dropbox, carbonite, logmein, etc.) with 2FA and none of them require this. All have option to text code.

Forced to cancel. Learned it's impossible.

Reviewed on 2021-03-20T16:13:52

I had been a loyal CrashPlan customer for years, using it as off-site backup for valuable family data.I started with an affordable unlimited personal account, and was only mildly annoyed when CrashPlan forced me to switch to a small business account (extra $$$ for no extra features for me), which was really just a price hike. Life went on. Then CrashPlan decided to force me again, this time into 2nd factor authentication. Totally unnecessary for me, but requires to install and maintain additional, untrusted, 3rd party software on my box, just to be able to log in. OK, I decide to close the account. Not possible! 2nd factor authentication came with change of password. I cannot log into anything; fist I would have to install those potential back doors. No way. CrashPlan support plays dead. There is no phone number. Only spam bots respond to email, sending surveys urging you to rate quality of support you just DID NOT receive. 2 weeks later, a human emails me that they can't trust my email to close the account, more info needed. I send it. Next day, a bot congratulates me on my renewal of the subscription. I'm sure you've heard stories about companies that once they have you they would refuse to cancel; the bill being too low to warrant a lawsuit, they milk tens or hundreds of thousands of suckers for years. I have personally met former insiders of other companies who (privately) confirmed this revenue practice. CrashPlan product appears to be run by one such company.

Crashplan Customer Service is the worst

Reviewed on 2021-03-20T12:54:39

Why is it so easy to sign up for a subscription and so difficult to stop one. Crashplan makes is worsethan usual to stop a subscription asking for multiple items of information about my original order that I no longer have nor do I have the time to research. If I log in to my site, I should be able to cancel. Brittany O gave the great advice of just calling my bank and canceling the charge there. The one time I did need to find a file that was deleted after a PC wipe, they said that particular file was not backed up. It was my Personal.xlsb on my C drive. So $20/month for a few years for no help and then attitude when I wanted to cancel. Thanks Brittany O.

This service really sucks

Reviewed on 2021-03-05T00:11:01

This service really sucks. Worked for a while, then I got all kinds of error messages.I contacted their customer service. They first offered simple, after that more complicated, suggestions. Their latest one was almost as bad as disassembling my computer and laying out all the components on the table. I could no longer access my account. I emailed them and asked to cancel my subscription They replied asking for a lot of details i could no longer access. Warning---stay away from them, they are crooks!

Complete garbage

Reviewed on 2020-08-09T23:43:06

They will probably go out of business. Constantly downgrading plans, even after moving to small business plan it the service quality would barely be useful for a regular joe,never-mind any business. - Complete garbage software with constant "service is currently unavailable" and other errors, essentially always fails to connect to crashplan a couple times a day. - Backups are unreliable, lucky if you can do a complete backup through once a week, it requires constant restarts. - Heavy CPU load and eats all of your RAM. - Restoring is the most painful process, SLOWwwww and unreliable doesn't matter if desktop or through web, both are really bad. - Added exclude filters, they don't want to back up all of our files any more and will decide what we actually need backed up. Honestly, if it's a matter of money, just charge more and do your damn job. This is the worst limbo. I moved from this backup after paying for 3 - 4 years, it's going downhill nonstop and I don't see how they will survive in the future at this rate.
