I use GNOME as a daily driver for over a year now and I'm more than happy with it. The community is great as well.
GTK's decent, but the GNOME shell is not.
Although GTK is an impressively visually consistent toolkit, GNOME itself is certainly not. It's also slower and less modular than KDE's plasmashell.
