Using Stardock (1) Fences & (2) IconDeveloper Together for PCs

Reviewed on 2021-04-08T02:12:40

I find the 2 best Stardock programs are (1) Fences and (2) IconDeveloper. They are great if you use them both together,as they complement each other. You can design your very own icons within customisable Fences. ICON DEVELOPER: Though Stardock IconDeveloper, I have designed my own icons that I convert from jpeg to ".ico" since they are the only images that can be used on PCs. I recommend that, before organising your desktop, you right-click on a blank part of the Desktop and change the icon size under "View" to "Large Icons". The icons look far clearer and so many people comment on how rganised my desktop shortcuts are. In "Large Icons" you can definitely see the pictures clearly and read the words in the icon design. More so in "Extra Large" View, but then you have less room on your desktop with fewer icons. You DON'T need to use Adobe to make your ".ico" icon images. You can use the Microsoft software, that you already have, to design your own icons, followed by using Stardock "IconDeveloper" to convert your jpeg designs to an ".ico" file. This is why you need Stardock "IconDeveloper". STEP 1: Make an "Icon Designs" Folder and Click on "Pin to Quick Access", so your icon design folder appears down the left-hand side, in the Quick Access Column. STEP 2: Open Powerpoint and change margins to a square, since all desktop icons are squares. This is done by clicking on "Design" and then "Slide Size". STEP 3: Once you have designed your icon with pics & text, use Microsoft "Snipping Tool" to create a JPEG. I recommend you see Youtube, if you haven't done this before. STEP 4: How to Convert your JPEG design to an ".ico" Icon image: 4.1 You need to already have Stardock "IconDeveloper" installed. Right-click on your jpeg design. 4.2 Cursor down to "Open With" 4.3 Select Stardock's "IconDeveloper" from the dropdown list. 4.4 Click "OK" button on the bottom right. 4.5 Select the biggest "size". 4.6 Click the "Save" button. 4.7 Navigate, so that you save your icon to your "Icon Designs" Folder, where you will save all of your icons. I suggest the Cloud, as this is a good place, since you can access your custom designed icons rom anywhere. STEP 5: How to add your ICON design to your Desktop Shortcut: (REMINDER - To create a desktop shortcut, you can send a location from anywhere in File Manager to the desktop {*NOTE: File Manager is usually on the Taskbar at the bottom of your screen}. Instructions below are how to add your icon design to the desktop shortcut.) 5.1 Send the location of your file / folder to the Desktop. IINSTRUCTIONS: Right-click on file/folder, click on "Send To", select "Desktop (Create Shortcut)". 5.2 Right-click on your Desktop Shortcut. 5.3 Click on "Properties" at the bottom. 5.4 Click on "Change Icon" near the bottom in the middle. 5.5 Click the "Browse" button. 5.6 Navigate to your Icons Folder and select one of your ".ico" designs. 5.7 Click "Apply" and then "OK". 5.8 If the icon image doesn't appear straight away, right-click to Rename the Desktop Shortcut and the icon image will update and appear. WARNING: Be Careful about pressing the "F5" Key to refresh the icon so your image will appear, because if you have Fences on "unlock" all of your icons will move around. Only use "F5" if Fences is locked, but you are better to Rename desktop icon as there is no movement of icons. *MY BEST TIP: Under any Microsoft Program, eg "Word", click “File” and then “Options”, set your Microsoft Software to automatically save to your "Desktop" location and when saving, make sure you have your desktop view set to "Large Icons", rather than "List". If you are a visual person, how easy is this to quickly save to the correct folder? FENCES: Can't live without it, but my biggest concern is that it won't go through the security check at work. This is a problem and I am under alot of pressure to stop using it. I love the way that each fence is a different colour. Anything to do with images is always in a "yellow" fence and anything to do with Meetings is always in a "blue fence". You can also change your heading colour and font to (for example) white, if you select a dark fence colour.

I purchased a number of Stardock…

Reviewed on 2021-01-30T17:11:39

I purchased a number of Stardock products from a well known software bundler (in fact I purchased the same bundle twice hoping that the problems I was having were as a result of my initial purchase)and have to say I am not at all happy with the results. Having installed the software through Steam keys, I was invited to register for a 30 day trial of the software (at no point in the purchase process was there an indication that I was paying for trial versions) and I was not sent activation keys to most of the products. I was sent Steam keys but not Stardock activation keys. Most of the documentation on Fences for example stated that no activation key was required as it was activated on Steam. The trial period ended on a number of the products purchased and the licences ended. Now none of the software works, I have no activation keys still and after reaching out to Stardock I got zero response. The only positive I can say (and it's worth the one star as Stardock deserve none) is that some of the first purchase price went to charity. The second purchase I made sure it all went to charity as I was concerned that this may backfire again. Sure enough, it did. Perhaps Stardock are a decent company who make decent software. Perhaps your experience will be better than mine if you purchase software through third party vendors or perhaps you'll have a better experience if you buy directly through them. I'll never know though as there's no chance of me buying their software effectively for the third time!

Fences is COOL but DON'T buy the Bundle

Reviewed on 2020-12-29T09:21:14

DON'T buy the Bundle, Marketing, Discounts whatever DON'T waste your money on the bundle.OK reviewing after 5+ weeks Fences: 5 stars love an organized desktop using for 6 week Happy wish I purchased Just this for $9.95 or whatever. Groupy: 4 stars organize app into a single tab Win 10 preview this feature awhile back but never seen it in the Main app yet, but here it is Nice but had some "odd behavour" so one star off maybe it's me ? SpaceMonger: 1 star Waste of time nice flashing charts but better freeware alternatives let you click and navigate and find the Space hogs folders on a drive this bugs out or is too slow ( I run SSD's ) Again freeware has better software CursorFX: 1 star Waste of time the icons get delaying ( resizing windows for example and things and looks just get in the way if you NEED to see different icon this may be for you I just couldn't handle the delay and odd behaviour any odd behaviour and you do notice it. Curtains: 1 star YES it changes the look Cool but bugs out in some apps missing text dialogues, odd errors when they pop up, resizing a window etc your screwed because you can't see the Button or input the text you need. Maybe that's why Microsoft has reduced the Theme options in Win 10? Deskscape: 1 Star Why do you want the desktop animated? who's watching the Desktop ? and if you have a high rez monitor ( no I do not have 4k monitor ) you see compression artifacts even in the 4k desktop versions on offer, just ugly when your staring at your desktop all day and not working.... Icon Packager: 1 star again if you need to change your icons OK but bugs and delays and slow down are noticeable and really mess with using the computer. Multiplicity: NO comment didn't use Soundpackager 10: NO comment didn't use 1 Have turned off windows sound since ..forever Start 10: 1 star OK when Window 10 first come out we all missed the old Start button menu. now I have really used to it and it has improved, this is just stepping back and getting lost PLUS most importantly it has bugs and acted odd, I didn't notice until I uninstalled it that things acted as they should. I work 40+ hours on a 3D/video editing machine with Threadripper CPU with 32 gigs of ram SSD drives Win 10 & all programs is installed on SSD. the lesson is buy what you need Don't buy the marketed or on $pecial "bundled software" it's fluff.

LOVE Start10 but would appreciate tech support

Reviewed on 2020-11-03T20:01:35

I have used Start10 for YEARS and have felt that I absolutely could not live without it.I think the Windows 10 start menu is an absolute mess. Recently my computer crashed. I reinstalled Windows. Started getting it set up and adding back my third-party programs and it crashed again. Long story short: Reinstalled Windows 6 times. Kept crashing. In the process I had two computer techs work on it and they both, independently, told me it is not a Windows problem and not a hardware problem. They both told me it had to be a software problem. (And they were both horrified at how many third-party programs I use. LOL) With their advice, after reinstalling Windows the last time, I added one program at a time and let it run a couple days before adding another. Because neither of these techs liked or trusted Start10 and they both thought it was probably the culprit, I learned how to use the Windows start menu and have not yet added Start10. I can live with it now that I have learned how to customize it but I absolutely waaaay prefer Start10. But I am afraid to install it. My computer is running great and it has been for a couple of weeks now. I contacted support and asked for their thoughts on what the technicians told me and somebody emails me back telling me to go to their forums or help pages or something. I wrote back asking why he couldn’t just answer my question. Again, same response. I wrote him back: You have lost a customer. Bye-bye. ****************************** 1/5/21 update: I still don't appreciate not being able to get better help, but I am thrilled to report that Start10 is NOT the problem with my computer crashing. Woo-hoo! So happy to have to back where it belongs!

Reviewed on 2020-10-07T01:08:20

i've used software from stardock for several years, pretty much from when they first came out.and what used to be great support experiences when problems came up, they now won't even talk to you or help you unless you are using their pretty useless forums. they say that " The forums are staffed with support personnel, developers, and seasoned users of our products. You will be well served there." but guess what? each time used thier forum, i was lucky to get a single response!! and those few were NOT " support personnel, developers, and seasoned users of our products". and most of the time, i never received the useless responses for over a week or two after i posted!! avoid these people and save your money, they arent worth anything and all they want is your money. and this review is using one of my alt emails because they have a tendancy to flag you for any help when you write something bad about them..

Surprised at negativity

Reviewed on 2020-08-26T09:05:34

I find it surprising to see the number of negative reviews on this site. I have been using Start 10for some time and have found it a brilliant way of modifying the start menu in a way that suits me rather than Microsoft. The program is good value and behaves well with few if any glitches. On this basis I thought I'd try Fences. I have never been keen on placing programs on the desktop and have had a clear screen for a while, using the start menu instead. Since buying Fences I now have a clean desktop with nothing other than a short list of categories each containing my program groups in 'rolled up' Fences. It is so good I will probably never use anything else. The program is solid and I have never had the hint of a problem with it. It has been easy to configure the way I want it and I'm sure will be improved in future releases, although I struggle to to see in what way. I therefore found it amazing to see the level of negativity on Trustpilot and suggest people try the product and make up thier own minds.

Reviewed on 2020-08-15T07:50:58

I bought Stardock object dock and my hardware is: 16 GB DDR3 and 4 core cpu 4.1 Ghz and 500 GB SSD. Looks good right? Nope wrong! After using object dock for almost nearly 1 year i deleted it , because its started to show the lag and overall impede my work through slow responsiveness. Actually Stardock should try to release new version of object dock , but they never did it! Can i recommend Stardock object dock for anyone? NO, it's a application with resource hog it will eventually slow down your pc and would impede your workflow!

Doesn't work on new windows 10

Reviewed on 2020-08-11T13:37:12

This program worked great on my old windows 8. Perfectly kept my desktop docs and folders organized. Not so much on my newer windows 10. After installing it grouped half my desktop in one fence, but ghosted the rest. And I couldn't find them when I physically click my desktop icon. FAIL
