Decent if you need a degree

Reviewed on 2021-05-17T19:32:00

If you are looking for a good, affordable, online school, then this is your place to go.Although the work is not enjoyable (tons of papers, making powerpoints and posters, recording yourself reflecting about your experiences in a class), this school apparently prepares you for the real world and is able to get you that degree you need to either get a raise, advance in your career or job, and earn those additional credentials and letters behind your name. If you just need the degree and need flexibility of not having to go on campus, WGU may be best for you. If you love being a traditional student who takes exams and quizzes and comes to class once or twice a week, you may initially hate this program. It takes some adjusting to. Although I adjusted well, I will definitely be getting another degree in a hybrid or face to face class format.

Best thing I've ever done.

Reviewed on 2021-05-17T18:34:50

WGU exceeded my expectations 1,000,000 times over. This is, hands down, the best thing I've ever done for my career - possibly in my life.I was able to land a job as a financial advisor because of the degree. The flexibility offered here is exactly what I needed and was able to accelerate and get my degree in a little over 8 months. That's a total of 30 courses (or 88 CU's). It cost me a little over $4k all in as I received a financial-needs scholarship. At a regular B&M school, this would have cost me well above $30k and taken anywhere between 2-4 years. I know - my brother did that. Passing a class is almost like a high. I'm almost a little sad it's over (ALMOST). I definitely want to go back and get my Master's, but until then - I think I'll have a guilt-free whiskey and enjoy this moment. What a ride.

WGU is a school designed in the modern world.

Reviewed on 2021-05-17T16:41:37

Was my experience at WGU perfect? No. Was it better than any other school experience I've had?Absolutely. When people ask about WGU I always say it's like what all schools would be if they were designed in the 2000s instead of the 1800s. Things that are perfect: * Everything paid for up front; no book fees, lab fees, test fees (at least for my degree) * All you can learn model; pay for 6 months, take as many classes as you can get through. * Everything online and digital; study whenever wherever. * Let the experts be experts; There are instructors to help when you need it, but they're not the ones that wrote the materials or the tests, they just instruct. The books and tests are written by professionals (most of the time, see below) What could be improved: * My degree is in IT, which is constantly changing. I don't expect WGU to update the materials every year, but I ran into some materials that were well over a decade out of date at times. * In most of my classes I never had to speak to an instructor (that's good) but when I did, they often seemed like they didn't even read my email and just sent a template response. This suggests they are probably over-worked or under-incentivized. * The onboarding process for a class isn't reviewed from a student perspective. I was often sent a "welcome to this class" email that had out of date information, then the main page for a class would have issues as well, like a class material search feature that had no content at all. It wasn't hard to navigate around all of this and find what you needed to finish the class anyway, but it wasn't a good first impression. Having been at two other colleges myself and helped some of my kids with their own college experiences I can honestly say that other colleges have far more problems.

WGU - recommended to those students who only want to do the bare minimum in nursing school.

Reviewed on 2021-05-17T16:27:26

Although I loved being able to "attend school" from the comfort of my own home and at a time that was convenient for me,I feel like the education was subpar. The basic format of this program is read the textbook, take the test, and move on to the next course. If there is an essay, they don't want you to actually use any critical thinking or writing abilities - instead, you're given a rubric and you must regurgitate verbatim what is written on the rubric. There should have been more live/recorded lectures with more opportunity to cater to multiple learning styles, more opportunities for student engagement/discussion, and there should have been more assignments/opportunities to work with the information in different formats. Also, booking an appointment with the course instructors was kind of useless. They only want to help you retain enough information to pass the test - I didn't feel like any instructors really cared if I actually understood and could utilize that information moving forward in my career. Also, between the course mentors and the program mentors, I felt pressured to move through the material faster than I would have liked. There were several instances where I was way ahead in the program compared to my pacing guide, and yet, my instructors and mentors would pressure me into taking the exam. I explicitly stated several times that I'm taking my time with the information because I truly wanted to learn/retain the information, but that didn't seem to matter. To them, it was all about getting me checked off on the course as soon as possible. It almost became a competition between the other members of my cohort to see who could take and pass the objective assessment the fastest. Although I appreciated getting together with the other members of my cohort during our scheduled lab times, I felt as though lab time was largely a waste of time. Lab days are generally scheduled to be 8 hour days. During that time, we were lucky if we got through 2-3 scenarios throughout day. Coming from paramedic school where the scenarios are very structured, and very efficiently run, I expected to move through more than 2 scenarios per day. I also did not enjoy the unstructured nature of how the scenarios were run. Sending a group of 4-5 students in to do a simple med/surg assessment/scenario is not at all how it would be done in the real world. Scenarios should be run in groups of a maximum of 2 people. When you send 4-5 students in at once, it kinda has the effect of too many cooks in the kitchen... It also didn't help that different lab instructors gave us different and conflicting information on several topics. I asked if WGU required their lab instructors to get together for in-service lab days to make sure everyone is teaching per WGU standards, but I was informed they were not. These instructors are all nurses that work at various facilities with various facility policies and procedures, so everyone did things differently. It was very frustrating as a student who is trying to learn it the "textbook way" in order to pass the skills assessment and successfully implement the skills in my nursing practice. The last thing I'd like to touch on, and the largest reason for my extremely poor review of WGU, is their inability to secure clinical placements for us. The communication on behalf of the scheduling department and the clinical placement was appalling, and WGU failed to get us placed for a large portion of our clinical hours. There were times when the scheduled clinical window was less than 5 days away, and we weren't even sure if we were going to have clinical placement, much less what our scheduled days/times were going to be. In addition, we would get nasty responses from staff when we tried to open the line of communication regarding our schedules. WGU needs to be more transparent and more willing to keep their students in the loop. I felt like I was left in the dark way too often and it was frustrating!
