Now just a zombie pirate site.

As the ensh*tification of everything to do with academia continues, academia.edu takes it to new levels. A once useful resource is now a zombie pirate site. My annual subscription renewed today and they took £216 instead of the agreed £108. When I queried it they refused to engage - just said that was now my subscription price. Luckily I paid by paypal who agreed to refund the money. Just hoping something else emerges that does what academia.edu used to do.

scummy pratices

Great website to make articles accessible but incredibly scummy practices when it comes to premium subscription. On top of the insane subscription price, unsubsrcribing is made hard to do and displayed in such a way to trick you into thinking you unsubscribed only to get a 200$ bill months later that customer service refuses to refund. It's so bad that it made me create a trustpilot account just to slander these practices.

Charged double

This year, Academia.edu charged me €252.54, which is double what I paid last year (= €126.27) and I do not know why. Since Academia.edu isn't listening to our complaints, I'm making an appeal: Let's find an alternative platform (which I don't know of) and move there en masse. Paolo Rocchi

problems with forgetting to unsubscribe

they refuse to return the money - over 1000 pln - if you forget to cancel subscribtion on time, even if you contact them the same day they took the money. beware.

I unwittingly signed up with…

I unwittingly signed up with Academia.edu, just to get one quote from an academic journal when I was a student, however this was not to be our last encounter! This company has been spamming me ever since.... for years in fact, with "mentions" (apparently somebody thought I had something worthwhile to say, when I had never even shared a paper with them lol!). Tried unsubscribing - this was ignored. I spammed them. This was also ignored. I even tried changing my name to something along the lines of "Fed Up and Annoyed" - who is apparently getting regular "mentions" in the academic works of others, for all the amazing things he/she/it contributes. The spam continues. I'm only sorry that I had to give one star on here. I don't really think they deserve a whole star. It really takes something away from those people who slog their guts out trying to learn things, so they can make better contributions to this world.

Huge price hike before auto-renew without being informed

Cancellation is challenging. I thought I had cancelled soon after purchasing last year to access a couple of items, but there was an autorenewal increasing the cost from approximately USD 160 to USD 272 on December 22nd. While I had not intended to renew at all, I was even more appalled by the fact that there was a massive price hike without justification of new features and informing customers and giving them an opportunity to cancel as a result. I see from other reviewers that I am not alone in being appalled at this unethical practice.

In my opinion, an auto-subscription scam

I went to check my bank account after Christmas to discover that this organisation had made an unauthorised withdrawal from my account of £333.60. I never had a paid service - their premium service, and I definitely did not authorise this transaction. To make things worse when I went onto the website I had not even been granted access to the supposed Premium services. I challenged the unauthorised withdrawal within 2 days of it being made and received an unhelpful response stating that the organisation did not refund subscriptions (even though I had never had a subscription). I then applied further pressure and can confirm that a full refund was provided. While I am relieved to have had the refund the situation should never have arisen in the first place. I would caution you not to have anything to do with this business as my experience is completely unfavourable.

Untrustworthy and dirtily tricky

I signed to get a free classic literature book PDF (Not some magic procedure) They are very untrustworthy since they do not play clean, this people keeps sending you unsolicited e-mails and when you try to unsubscribe, they give millions of other options of junk they will sent unless you tick off (Once, otherwise it ticks back on) “After” doing that, you "Have to save” each list of options. and then you have to click the link “Stop All” emails because this dishonest people they put another link close that says “For this Email” this people are using “euphemisms, words with hidden implicatons” etc that they can later show that “You clicked them Voluntarily” They are obviously trying to trick you into something. As said they are very untrustworthy. **** I read they even more dishonest answer they give to cover themselves. Just read my review and realize that they just give you generic information that every body knows but they do not address the fact that they "FORCE" YES "FORCE" to tick off a number of boxes or. "THEY WILL KEEP SENDING YOU JUNK" BUT THIS TIME THEY WILL CLAIMTHAT IT WAS "BASED ON YOUR SLECECTION" but they do not tell you that they "Force" your selection. So thank you incompentent employee who just made my point when you were trying to justify yourselves.
