Die Bundesanstalt für Finanzdienstleistungsaufsicht, BaFin, ist im öffentlichen Interesse tätig. Ihr Ziel ist es, ein funktionsfähiges, stabiles und integres deutsches Finanzsystem zu gewährleisten. Bankkunden, Versicherte und Anleger sollen dem Finanzsystem vertrauen können. Die gut 2.700 Beschäftigten der BaFin in Bonn und Frankfurt am Main haben im Jahr 2019 1.555 direkt beaufsichtigte Kreditinstitute, 1.189 Finanzdienstleistungsinstitute, 51 Zahlungs- und acht E-Geld-Institute, zwölf Kontoinformationsdienstleister, 94 deutsche Zweigniederlassungen ausländischer Kreditinstitute aus dem Europäischen Wirtschaftsraum, 20 Zweigstellen aus Drittstaaten, 551 Versicherer und 33 Pensionsfonds, 547 Kapitalverwaltungsgesellschaften und 6.898 inländische Fonds kontrolliert. Die BaFin trägt mit ihrer Solvenzaufsicht dazu bei, die Zahlungsfähigkeit von Kreditinstituten, Versicherern und Finanzdienstleistern sicherzustellen. Zudem soll die Marktaufsicht der BaFin faire und transparente Verhältnisse an den Märkten gewährleisten und die Gemeinschaft der Verbraucher schützen. Zu den Aufgaben der BaFin gehört es auch zu verhindern, dass das Finanzsystem zu Zwecken der Geldwäsche und der Terrorismusfinanzierung missbraucht wird. So sorgt die BaFin dafür, dass die von ihr beaufsichtigten Unternehmen die geltenden Vorgaben zur Prävention von Geldwäsche und Terrorismusfinanzierung einhalten. In Deutschland dürfen Bank-, Finanzdienstleistungs- und Versicherungsgeschäfte nicht ohne staatliche Erlaubnis betrieben werden. Die BaFin wacht über dieses Verbot und hat dafür weitreichende Ermittlungs- und Eingriffskompetenzen. Darüber hinaus ist die BaFin die Nationale Abwicklungsbehörde (NAB) für Banken, Wertpapierfirmen und Finanzmarktinfrastrukturen in Deutschland. Die BaFin wirkt in zahlreichen Gremien auf EU-Ebene daran mit, einen einheitlichen europäischen Finanzmarkt zu schaffen. Auch in internationalen Gremien gestaltet sie weltweite Aufsichts- und Abwicklungsstandards mit.
