NewsChannel 5 has a rich broadcast heritage. We were known as KSD in the early years and were pioneered by the Pulitzer publishing family. When we signed on the air in February of 1947, KSD was just the seventh television station in the entire country! We were the only television station in St. Louis for the first six years of our operation. We have been affiliated with NBC from our very beginning. We were the first station in St. Louis to broadcast in color, the first to broadcast in stereo, and the first to broadcast HD. In 2006, we were just the eighth station in the entire nation to broadcast local news and programming in High Definition. During the mid-80's, KSDK was the broadcast home for the nationally syndicated Sally Jessy Raphael show. KSDK has won hundreds of regional Emmy awards, dozens of local and national Edward R. Murrow awards and two national Emmy awards. Our community initiative, A Place to Call Home has been recognized with a national Service to America award as well as being nominated for a national Emmy. On September 5th, 1995, KSDK was purchased by Gannett, Co. Inc. and to this day, NewsChannel 5 remains part of the Gannett Broadcast family.
