In my email exchanges and phone calls with the sales agent, I clearly indicated that access to the Toast API was very important to me.I was told that wouldn't be a problem. What they didn't tell me (until after I signed the contract) is that it would cost $3,600 to access their API. I responded to the sales agent afterwards to let them know I was disappointed that they didn't share the information with me. I never received a response - I would have accepted an apology at the least. Maybe go with someone else.read more
Solid POS. But Be Wary of Sales Team & Bad Customer Service
Reviewed on 2021-03-22T12:40:13
This may be a little long. But tl;dr, Toast is good. We use it after 3 past pos systems and are happy with it.Just, check your monthly invoice from them, be wary of pushy sales, as well as customer service that could be much improved as they took 8+ months to stop overbilling. And they will force you into online ordering service (but you can turn it off)
We have 3 locations, we switched from one pos to Toast when we had 2 locations after a co-owner recommended. That co-owner unfortunately ordered kitchen screens for us. We're fast casual, like chipotle, you move down the line to order, zero kitchen orders. We caught they were billing us for kitchen display monthly ($20/mo per location I think?) after several months. We called, found the kitchen displays sitting unopened, unused. Asked if they'd take them back, they said no returns after 30 days, so, into the trash/recycling they went. So we asked, hey, please stop billing us for kitchen display.
Also, at this same time we realized we were being billed for online ordering (another $20/mo per location I believe). We use another system/service for this. So we asked, please stop billing us for kitchen display and online ordering. We've NEVER used either service.
Unfortunately, I assumed it was taken care of. 3 months later, I look at the bill (I should have looked sooner, I know). We're still being billed. We call again, same request. Next month, both services are still on there. We call a 3rd time AND email. Following month, both still there at both locations. We finally just gave up.
4 months later, we're preparing to open our 3rd location. I call to order (we got rid of co-owner who ordered kitchen displays, so it's my first time ordering), sales woman says I'll get you guys kitchen displays and online ordering. I beg her, please, NO KITCHEN DISPLAYS OR ONLINE ORDERING. Guess what the shipping email says is coming our way? Kitchen displays.
Fortunately, I call, she gets the order canceled and corrected. Hooray, no kitchen displays for 3rd location, but we're still being billed (now 8 months in) for kitchen displays and online ordering at the other two locations. . . . And guess what? We're now being billed for online ordering at 3rd location.
Toast, I get you guys love your online ordering system, I'm sure it's great and I'm sure your parents are proud, but sheez, is it possible to have the option of NOT having it? . . apparently not.
Finally, a hero steps in. We're setting up 3rd location, install, the guy is great, at the end he says, "anything else I can help with?" and jokingly I go, "ha, you probably can't, but can you stop billing us for kitchen displays and online ordering at our locations? . . . you guys have overbilled us 9 months now. Keep the money you've collected from us, it's fine, just, can you stop at some point? The displays are in a landfill and we've never used online ordering."
At this point we figured Obi-Wan Kenobi was our only hope. . .
Somehow the dude made it happen (maybe Obi Wan works at Toast?). . . FINALLY we weren't paying for stuff we've never used and we weren't using. AND I believe we even got 4 or 5 months of remuneration. Side Note: it all still appears on our billing, kitchen displays at two locations and online ordering at all three locations, but at the bottom of every invoice every month there are credits for it. I have no idea why they can't just remove those lines from the billing. I'm not sure if they need to report to the world # of restaurants "using" or "signed up for" online ordering but hey, after 9 months, all good.
So again, bottom line, double-check your bill every month. Watch out for sales people pushing things you don't need. I can't speak to how well / if online ordering works, but apparently, they love to push it and are very proud of it. (when we log in on laptop to Toast backend, 1/3 of the back end screen at the top is TURN ON YOUR ONLINE ORDERING! banner . . . no idea why. . . or how much we'd have to pay to make that go away, lol). And also, know it can take up to months to get some action on overbilling.
Even after all that, we'd recommend Toast. Because I get it, aggressive salespeople are everywhere. And there's a shortage of good customer service everywhere. I do wish, during these crazy covid times they would try a little harder not to screw over the little guy or at least, maybe give restaurant owners online options to uncheck kitchen display use and online ordering, so we wouldn't have to waste our and their time contacting customer service several times over many months. . .? Maybe use that awesome online ordering you guys built to let us turn off services we don't use/need or let us cancel online? Or even order equipment online for our new locations without us having to talk to sales people? Maybe?
Anyway, good work on the POS system overall. But I wish I could give 3.75 stars.read more
