Subscription Games, Circulation Games? Advertiser Games?

Reviewed on 2020-08-09T07:09:47

A lot more of the Honolulu Star Advertiser newspaper is now behind a paywall. It's their right, but their subscription services have been too messed up to deal with for over three decades. It's why I quit subscribing 30 years ago. Right now, they are offering an online monthly subscription to people that live outside of Hawaii for $12. In Hawaii the online subscription costs $22. Hawaii residents can also get an online subscription plus paper for $13 a month. Many Hawaii residents only want digital, especially the non-elderly. $22 a month might be unreasonable for an online subscription? Not sure, but why would they pay ten dollars more than people on the mainland? There was an online discussion of the Star Advertiser's subscription issues at ilind.net on 1/10/19 It looks like prices were all over the place. Customers complained that unwanted or extra paper copies were being delivered sometimes in spite of their instructions. They feel this is intended to inflate circulation numbers. Digital customers were complaining about malware, which they felt was coming in from outside the Star Advertiser and its partners. Is it? Recently I just wanted to buy access to one article. That wasn't an option. I looked at the other confusing and unappealing subscription options. I remembered their dysfunction around the smallest circulation issues. After I left decades ago they misused my unlisted phone number to do phone sales to try to get me back, even though I was on the Do Not Call list. That was years ago, but I it looks like they still don't care about subscribers or advertisers. I didn't buy anything. Another circulation issue: On Friday they once had a section called TGIF, which had entertainment listings. I used to buy their Friday issue for the TGIF movie info but they let it sell out by about 2 pm. People trying to pick up this important information after work were out of luck. Repeated complaints brought no results; it was "delivered by a contractor" ? So, here's the last people trying to get their movie info from a newspaper but the newspaper isn't there for them to buy. That was a few years ago. After that I tried their online movie information but found it too confusing and inconvenient to deal with. So I got that elsewhere. I can't say the Star Advertiser never has good coverage of anything, but the stuff I mostly looked for became a complete mess when that was unnecessary.
