Beware time limits and rip-off extensions

Reviewed on 2021-04-14T09:47:32

I purchased a 120 hour online course from them in October last year (2020) but for personal reasonsand bad timing I stopped short of signing the agreement and starting it. For the last few months I have delayed starting but kept an eye on all their (constant) newsletters (none of which informed me of this issue) and I have been frequently dabbling with the idea of starting my course. The other day they sent me an email explaining that I had only 3 weeks left to complete it. Extensions are expensive. I contacted them to explain that I had neither begun, nor signed the agreement yet. A chap called Rory explained that that doesn't matter- T&C's. I think this is legally dubious. As your right to cancel should really lie in the time from the date of signing the agreement, not the purchase of the course. In this very forum I have seen employees of TEFL.org responding to complaints making the same point; that once you sign, your time begins. Granted I did not fully read and consider the T&C's however I have not initially demanded a refund - merely the right to the adequate time to finish the course without having to pay for dubious extensions. Remember - participation in their online courses requires very little of their resources - you aren't booking up or otherwise consuming their time, blocking other students from signing on by not beginning a class - I've simply paid up front for access that I haven't used and they've had my money in advance for 5/6months. Now they want more. So if you're super "on it" and read through and understand all the T&C's and don't think that this issues could affect you, fine,, give it a whirl... and I'm just another idiot for making assumptions and not being diligent enough. However a lot of you are like me. This crisis has thrown our lives about and we are looking at ways of improving our chances and broadening our options. These qualifications (wherever you acquire them from) are a great way to do that but despite our intentions and hopes, reality can get in the way. This is an organisation that is no doubt benefiting from the crisis and millions of people looking to expand their horizons from home and computer. People likely to rush into purchasing "sale" prices (that actually never end) only to find that their kids, their jobs, etc get in the way. They shouldn't be relying on technicalities and unfair small print to extort money from customers. If they have to insist on an unjust expiration from date of purchase then at least they should offer fair warning of the expiration... NB- on their site they admit that most people take 10-12 weeks to finish the course. However they informed/ reminded me of the deadline only 3 weeks before the expiration - that is clearly strategic and shifty as F@*%. There is no way I now have the time to wade through this course in 7 weeks (1month extension), never mind 3. I would sooner try a different organisation offering the same services than give them any more of my money. ------------- - regarding their their response to me, below - "We also send email reminders nearer to the time of expiry." - 3 weeks before the expiration of a course is not a timely reminder, as I have stated in my review and so is a poor defence for strategically squeezing money from students. “As we provide online content it is correct that you cannot get a refund outside the 14-calendar day cooling off period which begins from point of purchase.” - they did not provide any online content, as I did not get access to it, as I did not sign the agreement. I also did not ask for a refund - I asked for my time limit to begin when I actually started the course and not from date of purchase. - my time certainly has been affected by this crisis but not for completing the course, for not being able to start it at all! My issue was to point out how they’re profiting from it, clearly without caring about these technicalities. I’m certainly not going to go into my private life circumstances with them to haggle for my basic consumer rights: the product is the access to the course material. - As you can see from their saccharine, corporate, copy and paste responses that don’t actually address what has been said, their response to another negative reviewer below this one, they state that access to the content is the reason for the refund policy (and therefore the expiration). 21 Jan 2021 “Hi Caley, Thank you for your review and we are sorry your experience didn’t match your expectations of this course. As our courses can be downloaded and saved once accessed, we do indeed state that a refund cannot be given after access." - it would be easy for them to simply begin the time limit once the access has been granted. It is obvious that they don’t make that the case so as to squeeze more money out of students failing to make deadlines or delaying the start of their studies

Excellent course

Reviewed on 2021-04-10T20:56:34

I recently completed the 120-hour online TEFL course and can say that the programme exceeded my expectations.Particularly the grammar and teaching methodology courses were most insightful. Assignments were challenging and my excellent tutor (Artur) gave constructive feedback. Most of the course can be done at your own pace. I do think it's an extremely worthwhile investment.

Thank you TEFL.org

Reviewed on 2021-03-18T02:52:15

I am sure with the negative feedbacks, it was just a one sided complaint lacking full details of what really happened. This was by far, a great experience. 6 months to complete 120 hours is more than enough time. If a person cant make it, its on them. The customer service is extremely helpful. They do give refunds for things not "USED". I purchased an extension just be on safe side of completion and I didn't need to use it. TEFL.org had no issues to refund my "UNUSED" product. My tutor for the duration of my course was great. Quick to grade my assignments and offer help with little to no delay. We had a huge time difference and you would have not been able to tell difference. Thank you TEFL.org for what you provide. I look forward to having some more courses completed if the need arises.

Tefl.org makes it too easy to buy.

Reviewed on 2021-01-20T21:34:21

Tefl.org makes it too easy to buy. Tefl.org will let you buy and sign an agreement to "forfeit your right to cancelation" without letting you read further into it.And once you sign it they will not give you your money back for their bad course that is not accredited the way you think. Tefl.org is meant for people who also have a Teaching Certificate. You will throw away your money with this organization.

Appalling service

Reviewed on 2019-11-28T11:19:49

Appalling service. Initially very good, but something has changed over the time that I have used them (2016-2019).Have completed several courses and always passed with flying colours (100% on all assignments) until the very last assignment on my final course. This is not my gripe. What I object to, is having to pay £30 after I have completed a course to read my feedback. The worst thing though, is that when I tried to contact my tutor about it my email was blocked!! I can't believe it! Why would it even be deemed necessary to do that? What kind of service is this? Was I blocked because my course expired? As students, we were told that we would always be able to contact our tutors and that we could even apply to them for discounts on future courses. One thing I have noticed is that courses are always on offer now. In addition, the cost of buying an extension has gone up. Charging pricey extensions to time-strapped students is a good way of making the money back. So be careful! A few bad reviews might not count for much among so many good reviews. But it could happen to you. And if it does, it really is not nice!
