What does UrbanGlass do?
UrbanGlass is a non-profit organization located in the heart of the Brooklyn Cultural District. Through studios, classes, publications, exhibitions, and events, UrbanGlass is dedicated to furthering the use of glass as a creative medium.
In 1977 a group of artists founded the New York Experimental Glass Workshop, a studio space to make the creative possibilities of glass available to artists in New York. Created during the early days of the Studio Glass movement, the New York Experimental Glass Workshop was organized to address the significant obstacles that artists faced when creating with glass—the extraordinarily high costs for equipment, space, and resources—that make the creation of private studios virtually impossible.
The basic need for accessible studio spaces remains at the heart of our work and today, UrbanGlass is a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to providing access to and education about glass as a creative material in the United States. Our professional studios, classes, public programs, gallery, retail space and magazine support the uses of glass in contemporary art and design. From our location in the Brooklyn Cultural District, we continue to provide the essential resource about the creative possibilities of the medium and offer unique opportunities for making, seeing, and learning about glass to over 7,000 visitors each year.
